BEHIND THE MOON (2023)

In a Mughlai restaurant in Toronto, a late-night visit from a mysterious stranger rattles the cage and shatters the peace. Now Ayub must face reality, the family he's left behind, and the dreams he's abandoned, all while keeping the restaurant clean to a mirror shine.

From award-winning playwright and novelist Anosh Irani, Behind the Moon is an achingly beautiful story of love and loss, freedom and faith, the meaning of brotherhood, and how we begin a new life.

“Saw #Behindthe Moon last night at the #TarragonTheatre and was completely blown away. Brilliant performances and beautifully written and directed. Not to be missed.” -Deepa Mehta, Academy Award-nominated director of Water. (ON X)

“…dazzling drama in an increasingly unequal city.” --Globe and Mail

“Behind the Moon is tender, heartbreaking theatre. Irani chips away — moment by moment, metaphor by metaphor, plate of food by plate of food — until he reaches the molten core of this dangerous situation and the broken people within it.” --Next (NNNN)

“Searing tension is the hallmark of Anosh Irani's Behind the Moon… The theme of immigration (loss, hunger, fear) is almost a genre unto itself. But Irani's play moves it to another level…sublime script…” --Our Theatre Voice

“It's a brilliant piece of theatre you don't want to miss!” --A View from the Box

“A beautiful, aching play… Anosh Irani slowly reveals each character's story, peeling away each layer of the work. At the end of Behind the Moon we have seen the effects of immigration on these three men, in a play that is funny, heart-squeezing, multi-layered, detailed and deeply felt. Terrific play and production.” --The Slotkin Letter

“…intense and captivating…” --Times Square Chronicles

“Anosh Irani's heartrending and captivating show…brings us humour and tragedy, satire and humanity…. Irani's play movingly finds the beauty and the misery entwined in the search for a better life across the globe, giving us a world that is simultaneously too vast to traverse and too small to contain one man's dreams.” -Ilana Lucas, Intermission

“Don't be surprised if, after seeing Anosh Irani's fine new play, Behind the Moon (✭✭✭✭), you find its characters haunting you afterwards… Filled with symbols and yet rooted in the problems of the everyday,Behind the Moon casts a long, powerful shadow that is hard to forget.” Glenn Sumi, So Sumi

“Behind the Moon grabs hold of you from the very beginning and doesn't let go until the startling ending. While it is an uncomfortable ride, the play is a must see.” Paula Citron, Ludwig Van Toronto
